This is where Greg Savage creates his works of functional sculpture. Whether the wood chips are flying from his chisels or sparks are shooting from his TIG welding torch, one thing is for sure, you just never know what is being crafted at the Hardwood Studio.
Slabs of rare Aussie burl wood are stacked to the rafters. Slabs of Jarrah, Coolibah, and Red Mallee burl are destined to become a one of a kind, natural edge table top, wall sculpture, or mirror. These rare and exotic burls may be carved or turned. Many times, these timbers are combined with recycled metal or many different man made or natural elements to create works with a rustic, yet contemporary style.
Always present at the Hardwood Studio are exotic wooden bowls. Some are turned, but most are hand carved. These unique bowls are sculpted in order to take full advantage of the burls natural form.
All of the Outback or Aboriginal style pedestal tables are designed around a single natural edge slab of exotic burl wood...sort of a George Nakashima meets Crocodile Dundee. The pedestal designs are based on aboriginal symbols and artwork.
Hardwood Studio is ground zero for anything and everything burl. You may even find an exotic burl being morphed into a guitar or bass which could soon be rocking at a club or a concert. A one of a kind peppermill or salt mill may be being readied to grace a gourmet dining table. Whatever the project d'jour may be, rest assured that burl is king!
